The United States being a ‘melting pot’ is an analogy that has been used for years. It is used to describe the fact that many different cultures exist in the US but we all mix together to form what we are today. While this is a wonderful idea, I do not believe that it truly exists in our country. Though there are different cultures in the US, many people do not readily accept this and embrace all of the different types of people in our country and use others cultures to form one, uniform culture. I believe that America is more like a ‘salad bowl’ in that all of the cultures do exist, but do not merge together. The term ‘melting pot’ could also insinuate that everyone is forced into the same cultures, but the ‘salad bowl’ preserves culture and that is what truly makes this country a great place because we have that freedom. These ideas are shown at Groves. While we are taught to realize what makes us different but search for similarities, people seem to flock to others that are similar to them. Groves is an extremely diverse school and that is shown while walking through the halls. While many different ethnic backgrounds and cultures exist at Groves, it is easy to see that people are friends with others with a similar culture to theirs instead of all ‘melting’ and conforming to one culture. The idea of a ‘salad bowl’ is also shown after the events of September 11th by people separating themselves from Arab Americans because they associated them with terrorists. For these reasons, I believe that the US is a ‘salad bowl’.
Although we all dream of America being the Melting Pot, I personally don't think this is true. At some places in America people are killed because of their religon, or cultural background. Obviously in those places there are extreme cultural issues and those places are definetly a salad bowl. I believe here in Groves we are a melting Pot. i have friends of all different religions, cultures, and races. But I don't think there will ever be a time in America wheere ever culture and relgion get along equally wqith eachother. It is just to hard fort some people to accept people for who they are or what they believe in. it would be great for America to be a Melting Pot so if we all keep trying to get along we will make process. But right now we need alot of work.
I think that the United States is both a melting pot and a salad bowl. I think that everyone would like it to be a melting pot but sometimes it just isn't. I think its part a melting pot because people of all races are friends and can be friends without it being wrong. Also people of different races can marry each other and have kids which makes them all look different and make the kid a melting pot in his or her own way. I also think that the United States is part salad bowl because people are still racist and still seperate themselves from people of different races and also people always want to know what you are for example in "They've Got to Be Carefully Taught" because she wanted to know where everyone was from and the mom in the story said that they were American. This is why i think America is a melting pot and a salad bowl.
I think that the United States is a mix of a melting pot and a salad bowl. There are many different cultures here that could not be found in other countries. I think that when the United States was first starting, it was like a salad bowl. Through the years many different cultures have experienced discrimination. Now I think that America is starting to get over that and become more accepting of people that are different from themselves.
